MEDIA RELEASE

Hon. Anne KangFor Immediate Release November 27, 2020 – The Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia (CUFA BC) is pleased to welcome Honourable Anne Kang to the new role of Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

“On behalf of our more than five thousand five hundred members, we congratulate Minister Kang on her appointment,” says President Daniel Laitsch, an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University. “We extend our gratitude to former Minister Melanie Mark and wish her well in her new position as Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.”

We recognize the advanced education portfolio is challenging, but it also presents significant opportunities to make positive contributions to the province through the public research universities. The support of British Columbians for the Horgan government is a strong message in support of the public sector, including post-secondary education.

We believe that the research taking place at the institutions of our member faculty associations continue to address the most pressing social, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges facing British Columbians, and know that post-secondary will be an integral engine of recovery.

We look forward to building upon our existing and productive relationship with the ministry and working with Minister Kang to address the pressing social and economic challenges facing our province and our research universities.

For further information or comment please contact CUFA BC Executive Director Annabree Fairweather at 604-367-5856 or [email protected].

CUFA BC represents over 5,500 faculty members, professional librarians, lecturers, instructors, and other academics at the five research-intensive universities in British Columbia, which include University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, Royal Roads University and University of Northern British Columbia.

CUFA BC has existed for fifty years and works closely with the member Faculty Associations at each institution. Our purposes are to support high-quality post-secondary education and research in British Columbia and to advocate for the interests of our members.
