For Immediate Release September 9, 2020 – A scholar strike for racial justice in Canada takes place on September 9 and 10 and follows the US Scholar Strike initiated by Professor Anthea Butler. Many of our university community members in BC are finding ways to support one another as they participate in varying ways in the #ScholarStrike #ScholarStrikeCanada.

As a provincial organization that represents 5,500 faculty members at BC’s research and doctoral universities, CUFA BC supports the sentiments in the call to end racial injustice and the rights of faculty to engage in protest as their conscience dictates. We support faculty, academic librarians, lecturers, and sessional instructors as they participate in public digital teach-ins and other actions and educational initiatives that advance the goals of the scholar strike.

CUFA BC reaffirms its commitment to anti-racism made earlier this summer to stand in solidarity with Black and Indigenous communities of BC’s university campuses, as well as with broader communities both local and global. CUFA BC is committed to racial justice within the academic community and calls upon stalwarts of the academic community — faculty members, administrators, and students — to support one another through collective action to end all forms of racist, carceral, institutional, and systemic forms of violence.

For further information or comment please contact CUFA BC Executive Director Annabree Fairweather at 604-367-5856 or [email protected].

CUFA BC represents over 5,500 professors, lecturers, instructors, professional librarians, and other academic staff at the five research-intensive universities of British Columbia, which include the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, the University of Northern British Columbia, and Royal Roads University.

CUFA BC has existed for fifty years and works closely with member Faculty Associations at each institution. Our purposes are to support high-quality post-secondary education and research in British Columbia and to advocate for the interests of our members.
