Created 2 November 2022 08:11

(For Immediate Release – Port Moody, BC, November 2, 2022 [revised Nov 25, 2022]) – The Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC (CUFA BC) is excited to announce the creation of the Allan E. Black Award in Law (in progress) at the UBC Peter A. Allard School of Law. This endowment award recognizes the significant contributions Allan E. Black, K.C. has made to the labour and employment rights of workers for over fifty-two years as a practicing lawyer. We are pleased to support an open call for donations from anyone or organization that would like to make a contribution to this award. While the award undergoes the final stages of internal approval mechanisms, the award fund is now ready to to receive donations.

After more than five decades as a lawyer, Allan retires with a remarkable legacy and a rich history of lasting contributions to bettering the lives of individuals through his work with unions and workers. Throughout his career, Allan has delivered tools of empowerment to people and unions so that they can in turn advocate for others. Allan has always been generous with his knowledge and expertise, and cultivated a strong community around him that will continue this legacy.

A number of labour organizations and individuals who worked with Allan have come together to honour him with the creation of an endowment award at his alma mater, UBC’s Peter A. Allard School of Law. The award honours Allan by investing in the next generation of law students who will follow in his footsteps by making life better for workers and unions. The first award disbursement will be available for the 2023/2024 winter session.
