Institute, yes; university, no

Given the number of under-employed technical people in the global market, the proposed "technical university" in Surrey should not have difficulties in hiring instructors, despite the threat of boycott (Academic freedom at risk in new school, boycott ad claims, Aug.15).

The institute will no doubt be a suitable place for the post-secondary education of young people who have performed well in the "work experience" part of their high school curriculum. However, it would be more appropriately named the Business and Industrial Development Institute. By calling it a "university;" the government perhaps intends to enhance the institute's status even though it does not conform with the criteria for accredited universities in North America. Such confusion in criteria will diminish our established universities in the eyes of universities outside the province.
